Chapter 23

The meeting progressed about as well as John had estimated. Rosalinda questioned him from multiple angles, her mind racing into the future as she asked for details he wasn’t ready to reveal just yet. Sure, he wanted his friends’ company to succeed, but haste could easily make waste if they didn’t have the right mindset. Never mind the issues he would have if he tried to explain how he knew of events in the future with such accuracy.

And there was also the chance his own actions had altered the flow, as they had his initial meeting with Lou.

Still, he taught Mary how to use the communication method. After promising she would be careful about what she divulged because of the potential of others overhearing their conversations, John tried to show Kramer the technique, though his second stint as a teacher ended up a failure as the old man almost cooked his own brain.

Even so, he left the meeting happy with his progress.

“That went smoothly.” Kramer’s disgruntled tone spoke volumes as he led John back out of the building. “Even though you told us so much, why do I still have the feeling you’re holding back a sea of problems?”

“Because your instincts are on point, as usual.” John patted the old man’s shoulder, allowing himself a small smile as he noted how Kramer didn’t dodge his hand. “As I said, I’ll be on the lookout for more targets. Be careful how you move, and pass on the message to your friends.”

Kramer nodded and turned back into the company headquarters. The plan seemed simple: Find any betrayers, capture and interrogate any possible leaders, and destroy them from the inside. Spreading fear and distrust amongst a cabal of double-crossing cowards wouldn’t be too tricky. All they needed to start the fire was a small spark in the right spot.

But John didn’t have any other targets he could reach just yet. Though he’d passed on a general description of the Necromancer Duo, those two rose in the southern hemisphere. No one knew their country of origin exactly, but their primary methods of communication had been in English. Unfortunately, the ubiquity of the language meant that they could have originated from almost any place on the planet.

Still, at least he’d made the effort. If they rose in the future, he could easily hold up his actions as proof against the assertions of an angry world.

John kept his mind focused as he walked back to his flat. The rioting had cooled off, likely due to the seemingly random monster spawns popping up around the city, but the occasional far-off smashing of glass and muffled yelling proved that some were still taking advantage of the situation. Soon, the remnants of the police and military forces would move out at the command of the government, and they would catch and deal with any stragglers as an example to any who tried to replicate their crimes.

No one had touched the flat. Most thrill-seeking criminals would aim for high-value targets, such as big stores or even the odd bank.
